Jakarta, October 8, 2023 - The existence of Green Open Space (RTH) in urban areas is very important to support a better quality of life and sustainable environmental health. However, the development of green spaces in megacity cities like Jakarta is often a challenge. The pace of urbanization is turning vacant land in urban areas into buildings and residential areas, leaving little space for RTH. Based on data from the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government as of 2023, DKI Jakarta has 33.33 million m2 of green space. This area is equivalent to 5.18% of the total area of DKI Jakarta..

Urban density and poor air quality have recently led to a number of health and environmental issues, as well as the need for natural outdoor activity spaces.

These problems make the development of the quantity and quality of green spaces important and require the participation of various parties. In addition, the development of RTH must be supported by inclusive access, especially for pedestrians. This topic was discussed in a discussion entitled “The Role of Parks for the Public in Urban Areas” in the framework of the Taman 2023 Festival held by the Ayo Ke Taman Community at Cempaka Park, Cipayung, East Jakarta (8/10).

The discussion began with opening remarks from Firdaus Ali, Expert Staff of the Ministry of PUPR and Sidarto Danusubroto, Presidential Advisory Council of the Republic of Indonesia. Firdaus Ali conveyed the Indonesian Government's focus on building green cities. “The development of cities in Indonesia will be focused on greener development, one of which is by providing parks,” said Firdaus in his speech.

Present as speakers in this discussion were Sustainable Development Specialist PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk (SBI), Widya Paramita and Member of Commission E DPRD DKI Jakarta, Idris Ahmad. In addition, community representatives such as PKK Kelurahan Cilangkap East Jakarta, Wise Choosing Community, and Tangsel Creative Foundation were also present.

The Director of PT Pendawa Lestari Perkasa (PLP), which is SBI's business unit for the application of innovative concrete solutions, conveyed the importance of the quality of adequate RTH supporting facilities. One important facility that needs to be considered is pedestrian access. “Pedestrian access is one of the main RTH facilities that need to be made so that people are comfortable doing activities in the park on foot,” said Widodo Ariawan. Widodo added, SBI as part of SIG, has presented innovative solutions to overcome and adapt environmental problems. Some of them can be used in the construction of pedestrian access that is safe and comfortable and environmentally friendly. “Until 2023, there are already nine green spaces in Jakarta that use solutions from SBI, namely ThruCrete, a porous concrete pavement to absorb surface water runoff and DekoCrete, a decorative concrete pavement,” Widodo added.

Widodo explained that the value-added solution presented by SBI is a form of SBI's commitment to contribute to sustainable development, especially in urban areas. “SBI's contribution to sustainable development in Jakarta comes in the form of innovative environmentally friendly solutions that can be applied in various green open spaces in Jakarta,” said Widodo. Widodo emphasized that this is a real step in achieving the targets set by the company in the Sustainability Road Map.

Innovative Solutions for Porous and Decorative Concrete

One of the development problems often encountered in big cities is the limitation of green open land due to the demands of urbanization which reduces the ability to manage rainwater. This limited land then raises other problems such as unabsorbed water runoff. ThruCrete is a highly absorbent concrete pavement solution that addresses this issue. ThruCrete is able to move rainwater that falls on road surfaces, parking lots, garden areas and sidewalks into the ground. ThruCrete technology supports the green area coefficient (KDH) 30% zero run off program or water conservation efforts by reducing surface water runoff by combining the durability of concrete with the latest water absorption technology. Not only a solution to the challenges of water runoff on concrete surfaces, ThruCrete also has a neat, clean finish and there are several color variations.

Complementing the aesthetic needs of open spaces in urban areas, SBI also presents DekoCrete. DekoCrete is a decorative concrete pavement with a wide selection of high quality colors and patterns. This decorative concrete solution has the advantage of durable application with easy maintenance and can be combined with the use of ThruCrete for water absorption. DekoCrete has an anti-slip texture that is safe to apply to pedestrian paths so as to support the safety of pedestrians. The technology used for this decorative concrete allows for an efficient pavement in terms of energy use, strength and speed during the construction phase.

Since 2016, SBI has carried out sidewalk revitalization activities in public facilities including RTH revitalization in DKI Jakarta Province using ThruCrete and DekoCrete solutions, including in the Gelora Bung Karno Senayan area, Kebayoran Baru area (Blok M, Barito, Melawai, Gunawarman,Trunojoyo and Perum Peruri area), MRT Line area (Youth Statue Roundabout to Fatmawati Station), Banteng Field area, Istiqlal Mosque, Pasar Baru, Tugu Tani, Wahid Hasyim, Sarinah Intersection to Tanah Abang, several RTH locations, Tebet Eco Park, Lebak Bulus, Senayan, Panglima Polim, and Kramat Jati.
