Turning Challenges Into Opportunities, Solusi Bangun Indonesia Strengthens Collaboration in Sustainable Waste Management

Jakarta, February 21, 2025 – As population growth and economic activities increase, the challenges of waste management have become more complex, requiring more efficient and sustainable solutions. Synergy between the government, private sector, and communities is key to creating effective and sustainable strategies to reduce waste, support the circular economy, and maintain environmental balance.

According to data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), Indonesia generated 27.2 million tons of waste by 2024, reflecting a major challenge in waste management systems. Addressing this requires innovative, collaborative strategies to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and convert it into more productive resources.

As a subsidiary of SIG and a major player in the building materials industry committed to sustainability, PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk (SBI) is strengthening its strategic partnerships with various stakeholders. This includes utilizing refuse-derived fuel (RDF) as an alternative fuel and empowering communities to support the development of a sustainable circular economy.

Cross-sector collaboration is key to addressing the rising tide of urban waste. Through its waste management division, Nathabumi, SBI has partnered with 15 regional governments to process waste into RDF for use as alternative fuel. Between 2020 and 2024, SBI processed 140,645 tons of RDF for use in cement plants—supporting more environmentally friendly production and offering real solutions for urban waste. Additionally, SBI has reduced carbon emissions by 16.6%, or 571 kg CO2 per ton of cement equivalent, compared to its 2010 baseline, through optimized use of raw materials and alternative fuels.

SBI’s President Director reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding strategic partnerships in waste management, including collaborations with local governments and communities. These efforts aim to implement sustainable and impactful solutions. “Waste management is a shared responsibility. We ensure that every initiative we take supports a more environmentally responsible industry,” said Asri Mukhtar.

As a sustainability-oriented company, SBI not only uses RDF as an alternative fuel but also cultivates a culture of environmental awareness across all operational areas. Its initiatives include energy efficiency in plants, rainwater harvesting in production, and the “Aksi Sedekah Sampah Bersama” program, which engages employees in waste sorting and supports community-based waste banks. Launched in 2023, this program has become an annual initiative throughout SBI’s operations, aiming to build collective awareness and encourage active participation in responsible waste management.

National Waste Awareness Day 2025 serves as a momentum for all stakeholders to reinforce real actions in more responsible and sustainable waste management. SBI remains committed to continued innovation and collaboration to create solutions that positively impact the environment, benefit communities, and support industry growth—in line with its mission to build a greener, more sustainable future.
