Performance in 2022
Operating in a contracted market environment with high energy costs and increased raw material prices in 2022, SBI managed to sustain positive performance through synergy with its parent company, PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG). SBI recorded a 9.3% increase in Revenue to Rp12.26 trillion and a 17.67% rise in Net Profit to Rp839 billion compared to 2021.
Lilik Unggul Raharjo, CEO of SBI, stated, “The tight market competition and price increases, especially for fuel, are inevitable challenges faced by the cement industry. However, the consistent positive performance we have achieved demonstrates the resilience of our resource optimization efforts and innovations across various fronts.”
Lilik also explained that this positive performance was supported by a 38% reduction in interest expenses as a result of syndicated loan restructuring with accelerated repayment. SBI also benefits from potential efficiencies from Sustainability Linked Loans, which support SBI in accelerating decarbonization initiatives towards becoming a green industry, offering lower interest rates compared to conventional loans.
Closing the Year with Gold
The efficiency and innovation efforts of SBI are inseparable from the consistent application of sustainability principles throughout its operational chains and business processes. At the end of 2022, SBI’s plant in Cilacap, Central Java, achieved the Gold Rating in the Environmental Performance Rating Program (PROPER) for 2022 from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia.
This award marks the seventh time that the Cilacap plant has achieved this recognition. Additionally, SBI’s other three plants located in Narogong (West Java), Tuban (East Java), and Lhoknga (Aceh) achieved the Green PROPER rating. All four SBI plants also received the 2022 Green Industry Award from the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia.
According to Lilik Unggul Raharjo, SBI has a roadmap to achieve sustainability targets focusing on energy efficiency through energy management and accelerating carbon emission reduction targets through the use of alternative fuels including refuse-derived fuel (RDF), initiating solar panel projects at the Tuban plant, and a hydrogen injection project in 2023 to reduce fossil fuel use and carbon emissions, aligning with government commitments to reduce carbon emissions. SBI is also optimizing digitization to enhance efficiency in its plants.
Business Outlook for 2023
Despite the global economic growth trend slowing down, several aspects indicate strong economic growth in Indonesia in 2023, such as increased household consumption following the mobility of people after the lifting of PPKM policies, activities during religious holidays, and ongoing development agendas.
Lilik believes that while challenges are inevitable, SBI chooses to create opportunities. “Those who currently want to own housing, use roads, and care about sustainability. This is our opportunity. At SBI, we strengthen innovation based on sustainability principles to create sustainable and environmentally friendly development solutions. Resilience is not only a benefit for business but also an added value for society,” emphasized Lilik.
In addition to sustainable solutions, SBI is also striving to create opportunities through the development of docks and cement production facilities in Tuban, which is a realization of a strategic partnership between SBI and Taiheiyo Cement Corporation (TCC). The planned dock development project aims to meet export market demand of up to 500,000 tons of cement per year, enhancing the Company’s ability to expand its export market reach in synergy with SIG and TCC.
