Strengthening Capabilities for Profitability Enhancement in 2023
High inflation caused by global recession and commodity price increases contributed to a 6.5% contraction in domestic cement market demand in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year. The end of holiday seasons and dry weather entering the dry season are expected to improve demand for building materials, especially in the retail market, from the second quarter through the end of 2023.
The decline in domestic market demand also affected the Company’s cement and clinker sales volume, which contracted by 8% from 3.3 million tons to 3.1 million tons in the first quarter of 2023. However, sales volumes of ready-mix concrete and aggregates saw a significant increase driven by strategic construction projects and private sector construction. The Company achieved an increase in revenue to Rp2.92 trillion in the first quarter of 2023.
To address future industry and market challenges, Lilik Unggul Raharjo stated that SBI will strengthen its focus on four aspects: Operational Excellence, Process & Asset Optimization, Sustainable Development, and People & Leaders. In addition to enhancing synergy with SIG in optimizing production and distribution and managing market and pricing, SBI is also expanding the Company’s capabilities for utilization through the development of dock facilities and production facilities in Tuban, East Java, targeted for completion in early 2024.
“This facility presents an opportunity to target an export market potential of up to 1 million tons of cement to the United States through strategic cooperation with TCC. Projected cement demand in the United States is expected to reach around 112 million tons by 2025, with more than 20% of supply obtained from imports.1 Currently, aside from several countries that are already export destinations including Bangladesh and Australia, the Company has also exported clinker to the Philippines and Australia, which are part of TCC’s market network, known for their stable prices,” explained Lilik.
In addition to exports, synergy between SBI, SIG, and TCC also promotes the introduction and utilization of innovative solutions such as soil stabilization solutions to improve soft ground conditions. Thus, SBI has the opportunity to expand cement sales by tapping into these new market potentials. Together with TCC, SBI has begun introducing soil stabilization solutions to the mining sector to effectively, efficiently, safely address various soil-related issues in mining areas and reduce accident risks. This potential is not limited to the mining sector but also extends across various regions in Indonesia such as IKN locations in Kalimantan, public roads, and railway projects in Sumatra. This is another realization of strategic cooperation focusing on enhancing research and development of sustainable solutions.
SBI also manages profitability potential through efficient operations, lower interest rates from converting conventional debt to sustainability-linked loans, and innovation that brings innovative solutions to various customer development needs.
